About

The program Actors of Urban Change
aims to achieve sustainable and participatory urban development through cultural activities. This is carried out by strengthening the competencies for cross-sector collaboration among actors from the cultural scene, the administration, and the private sector. Through local projects, coaching and Europe-wide exchange, our actors of urban change put those skills into practice.

Program Offers and Activities
For 18 months, an actor from the cultural scene, the administration and the private sector form a cross-sector team for the implementation of a local project. All teams from different European cities obtain support for their professional qualification as well as for the implementation of their joint local projects.

On a local level, the teams receive grants for their projects (up to 5,000 EUR) as well as support and customized tools from experts (up to 5,000 EUR). On an international level, the teams participate in the Actors of Urban Change Academy, a cycle of three sessions in different European cities plus a Kick-Off Forum and a final meeting in Berlin. During these sessions, advanced training is given in the form of workshops, lectures (e.g. on citizen participation, district work, moderating cross-sector processes), field trips and peer learning sessions moderated by experienced trainers. Moreover, shadowing internships in other participants’ cities allow the sharing of experiences and information, allowing to learn from one another, and to extend perspectives from a local to an international level. Throughout the process, participants receive practical support from the program management.

Possible Topics and Scope of Projects
From the program’s perspective, urban change is not focused on formal processes of urban planning or development, but rather on strengthening community-driven engagement for local urban development through cultural activities. In this context, potential topics to be dealt with include citizen’s participation, affordable housing/gentrification, inclusion/integration, cultural diversity, accessibility of (formerly) public urban resources and spaces, sustainable mobility and transportation, health and physical activity, green city/climate change etc.

Culture and Urban Change
Social developments are intensified in an urban context where their opportunities and risks appear in a particularly impressive way. From the citizen´s perspective, the boundaries between sectors become more porous and at the same time allow for cross-sector collaboration in urban development. Culture is a fundamental dimension within sustainable development. In this perspective, cultural activities potentially create sense and identity, promote participation and social inclusion, and play an important role in the positive development of cities in terms of the common good.
